Who Can Register Marriage Before SDM?

 

You can register marriage if:

  • Both parties are of legal age (21 for male, 18 for female).
  • Marriage is performed under Hindu, Sikh, Jain, or Buddhist customs (for Hindu Marriage Act).
  • Parties are from different religions or want a civil marriage (Special Marriage Act).

  • The SDM has jurisdiction over the area where either party resides for at least 30 days prior to application.

Witnesses (2 or 3 with ID proof)

For physical presence on the day

Photographs of marriage (for HMA)

With rituals like saat phere or garland exchange

Physical Appearance Before SDM

  • Both parties and at least 2 witnesses must appear in person.
  • The SDM may verify documents, ask basic questions, and check eligibility.

Verification and Registration

  • If all documents are valid and parties are eligible:
    • SDM signs the marriage certificate.
    • A copy is provided to the couple.

Time Taken

  • Under Hindu Marriage Act: Same-day or within 2–7 days
  • Under Special Marriage Act: Requires 30 days public notice before solemnization

Special Marriage Act Steps (If Not Yet Married)

  1. File notice of intended marriage at SDM office.
  2. SDM issues public notice and waits for 30 days.
  3. Objections (if any) must be resolved.
  4. After 30 days, parties and 3 witnesses appear before SDM.
  5. Marriage is solemnized and certificate issued.
